Five dollars or a tree planted in my name?

I currently have three different Citibank credit cards and know a couple of tricks to squeeze free money out of them. One way is by signing up for the totally useless Credit Protector program. I only sign up when Citibank sends me a ten dollar check which says that by cashing it, I am signing up for the program. Then, I call a few months later to cancel and sometimes they will offer to send me rebates up to $50 just to keep the program! (They did this for me a couple of times a few years ago, but I haven’t had any luck since.)

Another way to get a few bucks is to NOT sign up for electronic statements only when opening the card. Why not? One reason is that often I will get sent special deals printed on my statement which I would not receive online.

However, the main reason is that after a few months, Citibank will usually offer me a $5 statement credit if I opt to only have electronic statements. To be honest I haven’t kept track if I’ve got this bonus multiple times on the same the card, but I know I’ve gotten it a few times during my time with Citibank Credit Cards.

Well, the latest statement I got for my Dividends Card it didn’t offer me $5 dollars, but instead offered to plant a tree for me! According to my statement, eliminating one million paper statements saves 1,500 trees per year. Hmmmm….should I wait around to see if they offer me $5 or have they guilt tripped me into helping the environment? I supposed I’ll help save the environment, since I don’t help in other ways.

Is a tree worth more than $5?
